old mahathir

The testimony submitted by Dr. Mahathir to the Royal Commission over the 'Lingam' inquiry yesterday was a great disappointment. His responses, which consisted of nothing more than several 'no' s and 'I do not remember', is outrightly evasive and totally unacceptable in facilitating the search for the truth.

To begin with, he claims to have forgotten about the details of the scandalous appointment of judges when he was prime minister. While I can empathize that the events occurred ages ago and that Dr. Mahathir has recently recovered from a surgical operation, it does not entitle him the right to provide 'forgetful' answers. Certainly during his twenty years as Malaysia's prime minister he would have kept some form of record or account of the said event.

It is noteworthy that the rudimentary roles of a judge, among many other things, is to make and decide laws which affects society at large, hence, it is imperative that the appointment process is unambiguous, justifiable and transparent. Failing to comply or provide a rationale behind the appointments of judges renders Dr. Mahathir an unaccountable and opaque leader, as demonstrated by his lackadaisical responses.

It seems to me that Dr. Mahathir is concealing the truth by 'conveniently forgetting' the details. How convenient that is.
