Oxford or Cambridge University?

The debate over which Oxbridge university has finally come to an end. Pursuant to profound consideration over the past months, I have decided to apply to Oxford. Having attended the talk organized by the OUMC last Friday, where I had the opportunity to meet and speak with the current undergraduates, it has further affirmed my choice for choosing Oxford over Cambridge to read law.

One such reason for choosing Oxford is their reputation. Having said that, it is a fact that the University of Oxford has an exceptional reputation for producing nothing short of outstanding individuals. Take for instance, some 25 British Prime Ministers hail from Oxford, with Tony Blair being the contemporary example. On the other hand, Cambridge only managed to produce 15.

Although both Oxford and Cambridge adopt the tutorial system, I particularly favour the theoretical approach taken by Oxford, as opposed to the 'black-letter law' approach taken by Cambridge towards its law course. Somehow I am more interested in the moral, social and philosophical debate of the law.

The Oxford Union is another reason why I chose Oxford over Cambridge. Nothing compares to participating in a controversial debate or attending a talk by an influential figure in a hall where some of the greatest speakers of our time were groomed. Notable speakers in the past include Malcolm X, with the Iranian Prime Minister being the latest.

In addition to Oxford, the remaining universities that I intend to apply to include: UCL, LSE, QMUL, and Nottingham.
