the emergency

Just two days ago, my house suffered one of the heaviest downpours ever.

It began when rainwater gushed at one corner of my room without even the slightest of warnings. I responded immediately by shifting furniture away from leaks and relocating belongings to a dry spot while placing buckets to contain the water, but alas, to no avail.

The profuse incoming of rainwater rendered my family members and I near helpless as we tried very hard to mitigate the flood that was dangerously building up in my room. My bed was in an upright position; my clothes and two guitars were drenched by the constant drips of water. Buckets and newspapers were everywhere. The scene was horrific!

One of the biggest concerns I had was when water began to flow towards electrical objects, such as the fridge and the DVD player. But thankfully, none was affected.

After three hours of cleaning and drying, my body was completely sore. The worst casualty is my back which was attributed to the strenuous acts of lifting and carrying. It brings to mind what a lecturer once said to the class: 'piss off your back once and it hates you for LIFE!'. I certainly hope that it is not entirely true.

While the incident lasted for a mere couple of hours, it gave me a taste of what permanent victims of natural disasters were actually experiencing. That said, my heart goes out to earthquake victims in both China and Burma.
